Is Laser Hair Removal safe?
As laser hair removal only uses a beam of light to treat your hair, it is a non-invasive procedure which is perfectly safe. Furthermore, our system is approved by the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration) and thousands of patients worldwide have been treated safely and effectively with this laser. Because the device utilizes In-Motion™ technology and low-heat settings, it’s able to provide a level of safety unlike any other laser hair removal procedure.
Who can get Laser Hair Removal?
With the Diode Laser, almost everyone can enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal, however, the overall effectiveness of laser hair removal is dependent on a combination of your hair and skin color. Since the beam of light is attracted to the pigment in your hair, the general rule of thumb is that your hair must be darker than your skin. This unfortunately means that the laser beam will not be able to treat “peach fuzz”, light blonde, red, grey or white hair, as there is not sufficient pigment in these hair colors. Similarly, if your skin color is darker than your hair, the laser will not be able to identify the pigment in your hair color.
Additionally, if you regularly tan, you should discontinue all tanning activities for at least 1 week prior to treatment to avoid an increased risk of skin pigmentation.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
There are a number of factors that can affect the success of a series of hair removal treatments, but generally, after each treatment, you will see a noticeable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow in the treatment area. On average, most people will require a minimum of 6-8 treatments, but if you have dark and/or tanned skin, you will require additional treatments. Also, fine hair and treatments to your unwanted facial hair usually require 10 or more treatments.
The timing between your treatments is also critical for optimal results, as the laser is only able to treat your hair that is actively growing. Dormant hair follicles will grow new hair in cycles, which will need to be treated as they sprout. For facial and neck treatments, you should schedule your laser hair removal treatments every 4-6 weeks. For laser hair removal on any body part below your neck, treatments should be scheduled between 6-8 weeks apart.
After your course of laser treatments, you can expect a reduction in the number of your regrowing hairs by more than 80%, six months after your last treatment. You should maintain your results with touch-up treatments once or twice a year.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
To date, there is no laser equipment that will permanently remove all of your unwanted hair. It is important to note that some of your hair will grow back; however, it will be a reduced amount, finer version or combination of both. After each laser hair removal treatment, you will have a hair-free period. As your treatments progress, your hair-free period will be longer and longer. Once you have finished your series of treatments, the hair-free period is noticeably longer, lasting for several months or up to a year. To maintain your results and lengthen your hair-free period, we recommend touch-up treatments every 6-12 months.
What Should I Do To Prepare For The Treatment?
Many people mistakenly think they need to grow their hair out in order to undergo laser hair removal. This is a misconception and, in fact, your hair should be shaved on the day before or the day of your treatment. This helps make the procedure as effective and safe as possible. Waxing, plucking, and threading; however, should be avoided for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment. This is because these hair removal methods (i.e. waxing, plucking, and threading) remove the hair completely from your follicle and make it impossible for the laser to destroy your follicle. Shaving, on the other hand, is fine and actually encouraged.
What should I expect after my Laser Hair Removal treatment?
For laser hair removal treatments to the body, most patients will not experience any color or texture change in the skin. For laser hair removal treatments on the face, some patients may see some temporary mild redness at the treatment area, which may last up to 2 hours or longer. If you have particularly thick or coarse hair, you may also notice that some or all of your hair follicles are slightly raised and/or swollen. This is a normal reaction and usually subsides within a few hours.
After your treatment, you will also notice that the hair remains in your skin. This is because the procedure does not actually extract the hairs. Rather, it kills them at the root and it can take some time for your body to go through the natural process of pushing the dead hair out of the follicle. While your body is pushing out your dead hair follicles, it may appear as if your hair is growing. This is not the case, as the hair is being gradually pushed up through the surface of your skin until it naturally falls out. You should not attempt to pull out the hairs or try to help them fall out in any way.
Once the dead hair has fallen out of the follicle, you will experience a hair-free period. After your first treatment, the hair-free period will be brief, however, after each subsequent treatment; your hair-free period will be longer and longer. When you have completed your treatment series, approximately 60%- 80% of hair will not grow back. The remaining 20%-40% of your hair will grow back, thinner and sometimes lighter after an extended hair-free period. After undergoing multiple treatments, some patients experience hair-free periods for several months and up to many years.
